Engineer · Realtime & Telephony

Keep thousands of simultaneous phone calls connected, clear, and cheap — across carriers and countries.

SF / BangaloreFull-time

About the role

Aurora places hundreds of calls in parallel, and every one of them has to connect, stay up, and sound human. You'll own the telephony layer — carrier integrations, media servers, call routing, and the observability that tells us why call #4,721 dropped.

This is deep infrastructure work with a direct line to user trust: when telephony is solid, everything above it works.

What you'll do

  • Build and operate our calling infrastructure — SIP trunking, media servers, number management, and carrier relationships.
  • Design for scale: thousands of concurrent calls with per-call observability and graceful failure.
  • Optimize audio quality and cost across regions and carriers.
  • Own compliance plumbing — consent capture, recording rules, and do-not-call hygiene at the infrastructure level.

What we're looking for

  • Production experience with VoIP/telephony systems (SIP, RTP, WebRTC, or platforms like Twilio/LiveKit).
  • Strong backend skills — you're at home in distributed systems, queues, and failure modes.
  • Operational rigor: dashboards, alerts, and postmortems are how you sleep at night.
  • Pragmatism about build-vs-buy at each layer of the stack.

Nice to have

  • Experience scaling telephony internationally.
  • Familiarity with audio codecs and media processing.
  • Kubernetes / infra-as-code fluency.
